Flexible packaging for the frozen food sector.

The frozen food sector requires packaging solutions capable of preserving the nutritional value, freshness and food safety of the product even at temperatures down to -18°C, while ensuring efficiency on high-speed lines and high protection throughout the entire freezing, storage and distribution cycle.

Solutions for frozen vegetables

High-performance structures, recyclable mono-materials and paper.

BE-LASER laser micro-perforations for direct microwave cooking.

Materials for packaging frozen food must be highly performing: very high mechanical and puncture resistance, excellent hot-tack and outstanding slip properties, to ensure seal integrity and reliability even on the fastest lines.

How flexible packaging protects the freshness and quality of frozen food

Frozen products do not require packaging with an oxygen or moisture barrier: protection relies instead on the mechanical performance of the film, which has to work in extreme conditions, temperatures down to -18°C, impacts during filling and high line speeds, without failing.

That is why BEPACKS designs high-performance flexible films for the frozen food sector, engineered to:

Very high mechanical and puncture resistance, to withstand the sharp edges and rough surfaces of frozen products

Excellent hot-tack: the seal holds even when the product drops from above during filling, with no risk of breakage

Outstanding slip properties, essential for packaging machines running at over 90 strokes per minute

Every solution is designed to preserve the value of the frozen product throughout the entire supply chain, from in-line packaging to the shelf. Find out which packaging best suits your frozen products!

Structures and materials for frozen food packaging

For packaging frozen vegetables, BEPACKS offers a range of structures, according to performance, sustainability and production process requirements:

PET 12my + PE (transparent or white) 70my
high-performance multilayer laminate

PP 20/25my + PE (transparent or white) 70my
high-performance multilayer laminate

PE 25my + PE (transparent or white) 45my
PE-based recyclable mono-material solution

Heat-sealable paper 70 g/m²
paper mono-material solution, Aticelca® 501 class A recyclability

Paper 70 g/m² + PE 30my
paper/PE laminate, Aticelca® 501 class C recyclability

The same families of structures (high performance, PE mono-material and paper solutions) can also be adapted to the packaging of other types of frozen products, with thicknesses and laminations to be defined according to the specific product and line conditions.

BE-LASER: laser micro-perforations for microwave cooking

For frozen products to be cooked directly in the microwave, BEPACKS offers BE-LASER, the solution with micro-perforations made by laser pre-cutting instead of cold or hot needles.

• Needle perforation (cold or hot) is not perfectly airtight and may cause the pack to open unintentionally during packaging or handling
• Laser pre-cutting ensures precise, controlled perforation, preserving the integrity and seal of the pack until the moment of cooking
• Steam is released in a controlled way during microwave cooking, without compromising the closure of the pack

Packaging that communicates quality and strengthens the brand

Packaging for frozen food must ensure high resistance to condensation and frost and keep its shelf appeal even in sub-zero display cabinets, with ease of opening and, where required, easy-open features.

• High-definition flexographic or rotogravure printing, resistant to condensation and frost
• Inks suitable for food contact
• High graphic quality and colour consistency even on large volumes
• Optional transparent windows to show the product even at sub-zero temperatures

Every packaging solution is developed according to brand positioning, the sales channel and the expectations of the end consumer. Would you like to see printing examples for your brand? Request a customised sample.

Frequently asked questions about flexible packaging for the frozen food sector (FAQ)

The most widely used structures are high-performance laminates in PET 12my + PE (transparent or white) 70my, or PP 20/25my + PE (transparent or white) 70my. Recyclable PE mono-material solutions (PE 25my + PE 45my) and paper solutions are also available: heat-sealable paper 70 g/m² (Aticelca® 501 class A) or paper 70 g/m² + PE 30my (Aticelca® 501 class C). The choice depends on the level of performance required, the type of packaging line and sustainability targets.

BE-LASER is the BEPACKS solution that creates micro-perforations for microwave cooking by laser pre-cutting instead of cold or hot needles. Needle perforation is not perfectly airtight and may cause the pack to open unintentionally during logistics or cooking; laser pre-cutting, on the other hand, ensures precise perforation that preserves the integrity of the pack until the moment of use and releases steam in a controlled way during cooking.

On frozen food packaging lines the product drops from above into the pack during filling. Excellent hot-tack, that is, the strength of the heat seal even before it has completely cooled, prevents the impact of the product from causing breakage or opening of the seal, ensuring the integrity of the pack right from the production stage.

Lines for packaging frozen vegetables can exceed 90 strokes per minute. Outstanding film slip (a low coefficient of friction) is essential to allow the machines to form, fill and seal the packs at this speed, without jamming or loss of productivity.

A heat-sealable paper solution of 70 g/m² is available, classified in Aticelca® 501 class A (the highest level of recyclability with paper), and a laminated solution of paper 70 g/m² + PE 30my, classified in Aticelca® 501 class C. Both structures are recyclable with paper, with a reduced CONAI environmental contribution compared with traditional plastic laminates.
